Premium Hiroshima Bingo Binchotan Japanese White Charcoal - 2kg (Quarter Cut)

While Kishu and Tosa are the famous names in Japanese charcoal, Hiroshima's Bingo Binchotan offers a unique provenance rooted in the region's legendary "Tatara" ironmaking history. It hails from the Chugoku mountains, where a sophisticated forestry system was established centuries ago to fuel the ancient iron furnaces. Today, this legacy provides an abundance of high-quality oak, allowing artisans to craft a premium white charcoal that rivals the most famous brands in purity and performance.

This 2kg Quarter Cut pack utilises this historical resource to offer a dense, hard charcoal that burns with a searing, stable heat. It is a perfect entry point for home enthusiasts wishing to experience authentic Japanese grilling, providing manageable pieces that light more easily than whole logs while delivering the clean, odourless burn essential for Yakitori and Wagyu.

What's Included

  • 1 x Premium Hiroshima Bingo Binchotan - 2kg (Quarter Cut)

Key Features

  • The Tatara Legacy: Sourced from forests in the Chugoku mountains that were originally cultivated to support the ancient Tatara iron industry, leaving a legacy of superior hardwood resources.
  • Intense Infrared Heat: Burns with a powerful, steady glow that crisps the exterior of food while retaining internal moisture.
  • Clean & Odourless: The high-temperature carbonisation process removes impurities, ensuring no unwanted flavours or smoke transfer to your ingredients.
  • Versatile Quarter Cut: Split into quarter-sized logs for easier handling, faster ignition, and flexible arrangement in smaller konro grills.
  • Convenient Size: The 2kg pack is ideal for home use, trial runs, or occasional grilling sessions.

Safety Instructions

  • Outdoor Use Only: Never use charcoal in an enclosed space, such as a home, tent, or vehicle.
  • Carbon Monoxide Hazard: Burning charcoal produces carbon monoxide, which is odourless and can be fatal. Ensure adequate ventilation at all times.
  • Lighting: Binchotan requires sustained, high heat to ignite. A charcoal chimney starter is highly recommended. Never use lighter fluid. For detailed instructions, please see our guide to safely lighting binchotan.
  • Handle with Care: Use tongs to handle hot charcoal and ensure it is fully extinguished in a dedicated extinguisher pot after use.

About Bingo Binchotan (Hiroshima)

The distinction of Bingo Binchotan lies in the "Satoyama" forestry system left behind by the Tatara ironmaking tradition. For centuries, the Chugoku region managed vast forests to fuel the iron smelters. Although the iron industry required soft pine, this sustainable management preserved extensive stands of Japanese Oak (Kunugi and Konara). Modern Bingo Binchotan artisans now utilise this "inheritance" of premium wood to produce white charcoal of exceptional density and consistency, continuing a tradition of fire and heat that has defined the region for generations.
