Made in Japan Binchotan

Traditionalists consider only binchotan produced in Kishu, Tosa, and Hyuga as authentic binchotan. Their density and thermal power are significantly different.

Premium Kishu Binchotan Japanese White Charcoal - 15kg

For the true connoisseur of Japanese barbecue, there is only one name that represents the absolute pinnacle of charcoal: Kishu Binchotan. Hailing from Wakayama, the birthplace of binchotan, this is the highest grade of Japanese white charcoal, sought after by the world's most exclusive restaurants and yakitori masters for its unparalleled purity and performance.

Kishu Binchotan is authentic white charcoal, handcrafted by artisans from dense Japanese ubame oak. It burns with an incredibly pure, intense, and long-lasting heat, producing significantly less smoke and odours than any other charcoal. This allows the true flavour of your ingredients to shine, creating a grilling experience that simply cannot be replicated.

Traditionalists believe that only binchotan produced in select regions of Japan can truly be called binchotan, with Kishu recognised as the top source:

An Important Note on Sizing & Availability

As the birthplace of Japanese binchotan, Kishu's exceptional quality makes it highly sought after, often resulting in limited supply. Because of this, we will get whatever cuts we can source from the artisans—sometimes small, sometimes quarter-sized—but they are all user-friendly for different types of small to large grills.

  • Handle with Care: Use tongs to handle hot charcoal and ensure it is fully extinguished in a dedicated extinguisher pot after use.

About Kishu Binchotan

Kishu, in Wakayama Prefecture, is recognised as the birthplace of binchotan, with its origins dating back to the 1600s. Traditionalists maintain that only white charcoal produced from ubame oak (Quercus phillyraeoides) in Kishu should be called binchotan. Its distinctive qualities are directly linked to the unique properties of the local oak and cannot be replicated by alternative materials.
