The Taiki Charcoal Extinguishing Pot (hikeshi tsubo) is an essential companion to any konro grill. Crafted in Japan from thick, insulating clay, it withstands the high heat of used charcoal and snuffs out valuable binchotan so it can be relit next time.

Placing hot charcoal inside and sealing the pot with the heavy lid cuts off the oxygen supply, extinguishing the coals quickly without the mess or damage of using water. DANGER: CARBON MONOXIDE HAZARD. Hot charcoal continues to produce carbon monoxide, which has no odour and can be lethal, until it is fully extinguished. NEVER transfer or extinguish charcoal in enclosed spaces such as homes, tents, or vehicles. Use OUTDOORS ONLY in a well-ventilated area. The pot exterior becomes extremely hot and stays hot for a long time; always handle with heat-resistant gloves and place on a heat-proof surface.

How to Use

  1. Using long metal tongs, carefully transfer the hot, used charcoal from your grill into the pot.
  2. Place the lid securely on top to cut off the air supply.
  3. Allow the pot to cool down completely on a heat-proof surface before handling. The exterior will remain very hot for a long time.
  4. Once completely cool, the extinguished charcoal can be removed and is ready for your next use.
