What is traditional tobikanna carving?

The traditional tobikanna (飛鉋) carving technique, used in Japanese pottery, involves creating decorative patterns on the clay's surface. The term "tobikanna" translates to "jumping kanna," with "kanna" referring to the carving tool and "tobi" to the jumping motion.

This technique involves the potter rhythmically applying a small, sharp tool to the spinning clay, resulting in repetitive, often wavy or linear patterns that add both tactile quality and visual appeal to the pottery, giving it a handcrafted, artisanal look. Deeply rooted in Japanese traditions, tobikanna is often associated with rustic, handmade ceramics.
