Kinka Okunoto Konro Grill - 31cm (Small)

The Kinka Okunoto Konro is the benchmark Japanese charcoal grill in our range — the artisanal diatomite grill trusted by professional chefs and featured on Australian cooking shows. Each grill is hand-cut from a single block of natural diatomite quarried in the Okunoto region of Japan's Noto Peninsula.

The porous diatomite provides outstanding heat insulation, letting binchotan charcoal burn hotter for longer and cooking with a strong radiant heat that seals in juices. Sized for gatherings of 2–6 people — ideal for yakitori, seafood and vegetables. Read a customer's write-up of this grill, or if you're weighing up sizes, see our 31cm vs 54cm sizing guide.

Key Features

  • Authentic Okunoto Diatomite: Hand-cut from a single block of pure Okunoto diatomite, offering the highest heat retention in our konro range.
  • Radiant Heat Cooking: The diatomite walls reach high temperatures and cook food with infrared heat, sealing in moisture for a juicy result.
  • Compact & Versatile: The 31cm size is ideal for small groups. Recommended charcoal use is approx. 1kg per session — browse our binchotan collection.
  • Artisanal Craftsmanship: Each grill is a unique, hand-finished piece of traditional Japanese craftsmanship.

Important Notes, Use & Care

For outdoor use only. This is a charcoal grill and must only be used in a well-ventilated area.

Fine cracks are normal. Diatomite expands and contracts with heat, so hairline cracks can appear on the surface within the first few uses — sometimes on the very first. This is how the material behaves and does not affect performance. Our guide to cracks and the lifecycle of a konro grill explains what is normal and what is not.

Handle with Care: The grill body becomes extremely hot during use. Always place it on a heat-proof surface like the optional wooden base. Do not use water to clean the diatomite interior. Allow to cool completely and brush out any ash.

Store Indoors: Diatomite is porous. A grill left outside absorbs moisture, which expands the next time it is lit and turns fine surface cracks into deep ones.

Limited Availability: Due to the artisanal hand-cut production process, availability can be limited. If this item is out of stock, please contact us to join the waiting list.

Returns Policy: Please choose carefully. Due to the delicate nature of diatomite grills, we do not accept returns for change of mind.

Use & Care

  • Water: Never pour water on a hot konro — sudden temperature change can crack the body. Let the coals burn down or remove them safely.
