Hachiware is named for the marking that splits its face in two, said to resemble the character for eight (八). On this bowl it is drawn in the deepest indigo of the Neko Chigura cats, standing out sharply against the white porcelain.

At 12cm across, this is the bowl that covers the small dishes of a Japanese meal: pickles, simmered vegetables, dressed salads, or dessert.
