Kohiki Black Clay Japanese Crosshatch Pattern Bowl

This 12ccm bowl is a suitable size for individual servings of rice, soup, or desserts. Its design features the traditional Kohiki technique, where a slip of white clay is applied over the black clay body, giving it a soft, milky appearance that contrasts beautifully with the exposed dark clay at the rim.

The exterior is adorned with a meticulously hand-carved crosshatch pattern, providing both visual appeal and a textured grip.

What is Kohiki?

Kohiki ceramics are a unique style of pottery that originated in Korea during the Yi Dynasty and were introduced to Japan in the 16th century. The distinctive characteristic of Kohiki ware is its appearance, which resembles a white powder (Kona) spread on ceramics.

This effect is achieved by covering a dark clay body with a thin white slip, followed by a translucent glaze. The result is a soft texture and a warm, milky white finish that contrasts with the darker clay body underneath.  This style of ceramics became particularly popular among Chajin, the practitioners of tea ceremonies, in Japan since the late 16th century.

The warm and milky white of Kohiki, as opposed to the pale white of porcelain, has made it a favourite among collectors.​​​​
