Premium Miyazaki Hyuga Binchotan Japanese White Charcoal - 12kg (Small Cut)

While Wakayama is the historical home of binchotan, Miyazaki Prefecture — historically known as Hyuga province — is Japan's largest producer of high-grade white charcoal, with vast forests of indigenous Blue Oak (Arakashi) and a long tradition of charcoal craftsmanship.

Blue Oak is slightly softer than the Ubame Oak used in Kishu and Tosa, and that is Hyuga's advantage: it lights noticeably faster while still delivering the searing infrared heat of authentic binchotan — the best cost-performance ratio in the range. The Small Cut pieces suit tabletop konro grills, and are ideal for filling gaps in a charcoal arrangement to stabilise heat. This 12kg bulk box keeps busy kitchens supplied.

Key Features

  • Easier to Ignite: Blue Oak is slightly softer than Ubame Oak, so it lights faster than Kishu or Tosa varieties — saving time during service.
  • The Smart Choice: Authentic binchotan heat at a more accessible price point — the best cost-performance in the range.
  • Small Cut Utility: Smaller pieces allow precise heat adjustment, fit compact grills, and fill gaps in a charcoal bed to stabilise heat.
  • High Heat Output: Intense infrared heat sears meat and seafood while retaining internal moisture.
  • Clean Combustion: High-temperature carbonisation leaves a fuel that burns with minimal smoke and odour.
  • Commercial Volume: The 12kg bulk box keeps a consistent supply for restaurants and frequent use.

About Miyazaki Hyuga Binchotan

Miyazaki Hyuga Binchotan is the result of centuries of forestry expertise in Miyazaki Prefecture. Before entering the kiln, the Blue Oak is dried naturally for over 30 days to ensure low moisture content, then carbonised at temperatures exceeding 1000°C — burning off impurities and leaving a carbon structure so dense it rings with a metallic sound when struck.

Use & Care
  • User guide: Setting up, using and caring for your konro grill.
  • Lighting binchotan: Dense white charcoal takes longer to light than regular charcoal — our guide shows the safe way.
  • Ventilation: Use your konro outdoors or in a well-ventilated space only — never in an enclosed room.
  • Water: Never pour water on a hot konro — sudden temperature change can crack the body. Let the coals burn down or remove them safely.
  • Reuse: Binchotan can be snuffed out in an airtight metal container and relit next time.
