Touga Wooden Base for Donabe - 18cm

A donabe comes off the stove holding intense heat in its base — enough to scorch a fabric mat or linen heat protector, let alone the table underneath. This Touga wooden base is a trivet made for exactly that job: thick natural wood takes the heat without marking, so the pot can go straight from the stove to the table.

The surface is flame-charred in Japan using the traditional Yakisugi (焼杉) method, which further improves heat resistance and highlights the natural grain.

What's Included

  • 1 x Wooden Base for Donabe (18cm)

Prefer extra thickness? The slatted version is thicker and sits even steadier under a full pot.

Protect your hands too: see all donabe mats and pot holders.

Key Features

  • Handles Donabe Heat: Shields the table from base heat that would scorch fabric mats and linen protectors.
  • Authentic Yakisugi Finish: Traditional flame-charring improves heat resistance and durability without chemical sealants.
  • Straight to the Table: Serve nabe directly from the pot with the table protected.
  • Made by Touga: A tableware accessory from Touga, a Japanese maker of donabe tableware and accessories.

Use and Care

  • This item is treated with a traditional flame-charring process. A fine, dark powder (excess carbon) may be present initially; this is a normal characteristic of the finish and will diminish with use.
  • To clean, gently wipe the surface with a damp cloth using water only.
  • Do not use soap or detergent, as it may damage the natural finish.
  • After wiping, allow the wood to air dry completely before storing.

Use & Care
  • User guide: Everything from first use to everyday care.
  • First use: Simmer rice porridge in your new donabe first — the starch seals the porous clay and strengthens the pot.
  • Before cooking: Make sure the outside base is completely dry before it goes on the flame — a wet base can crack.
  • Never heat empty: Always have liquid or food in the pot before heating.
  • Avoid sudden temperature changes: Don't run cold water into a hot pot — let it cool first.
  • Storage: Dry thoroughly before putting away to prevent mould in the porous clay.
Good to Know
  • How donabe is made: The special clay behind these pots and why it matters.
  • How donabe ages: Fine lines and colour changes over time aren't flaws — they're character.
  • Heat source: Donabe is made for open flame and shines on a gas burner — it's not suitable for induction cooktops.
  • Donabe recipes: Hotpots, rice and more to get you started.
