What is the size of a cup?

A cup is a unit of measurement for raw rice, with a capacity of approximately 180 ml, referred to as "gō" in Japanese.

Misuzu Donabe Japanese Clay Pot Rice Pot - 7 Cups

The Misuzu Donabe Rice Pot is an authentic Japanese clay pot made in Yokkaichi to a long-standing traditional design. Its rustic, textured glaze and distinctive twisted handles give a secure grip when carrying the pot to the table.

Engineered for cooking rice, the thick clay walls and heavy, tight-fitting single lid create the right balance of pressure and steam, cooking fluffy, delicious rice quickly over strong heat. The versatile casserole shape also suits soups, stews, and other slow-cooked dishes — at 7 cups (approx. 3.0 L), it serves four to five people.

What's Included

  • 1 x Misuzu Donabe Rice Pot with Lid - 7 Cups

Key Features

  • Engineered for Perfect Rice: The cauldron shape, thick walls, and tight-fitting single lid cook rice evenly, enhancing its natural sweetness.
  • Versatile Casserole Style: The generous 7-cup capacity also suits family-sized stews, soups, and one-pot meals.
  • Superior Heat Retention: High-quality clay heats evenly and keeps food hot long after leaving the stove.

  • Made in Japan: Authentic Banko ware from Yokkaichi, a region famous for durable donabe.

Seasoning & Care

Before first use, perform medome (rice porridge seasoning) to seal the clay and prevent cracking or leaking. Full step-by-step instructions are in our donabe user guide.

  • Avoid sudden temperature changes (e.g. do not put a cold pot on high heat, or place a hot pot on a cold or wet surface).
  • Hand wash only once cooled. Do not soak for extended periods.
  • Dry thoroughly before storage to prevent mould.

About Banko Ware

Banko ware (Banko-yaki) is a traditional Japanese pottery style from Yokkaichi in Mie Prefecture, with a history spanning over 300 years. Its clay is exceptionally heat-resistant, making Banko ware the leading choice for donabe production in Japan — around 80% of all Japanese donabe are Banko ware.

Use & Care
  • User guide: Everything from first use to everyday care.
  • First use: Simmer rice porridge in your new donabe first — the starch seals the porous clay and strengthens the pot.
  • Before cooking: Make sure the outside base is completely dry before it goes on the flame — a wet base can crack.
  • Never heat empty: Always have liquid or food in the pot before heating.
  • Avoid sudden temperature changes: Don't run cold water into a hot pot — let it cool first.
  • Storage: Dry thoroughly before putting away to prevent mould in the porous clay.
Good to Know
  • How donabe is made: The special clay behind these pots and why it matters.
  • How donabe ages: Fine lines and colour changes over time aren't flaws — they're character.
  • Heat source: Donabe is made for open flame and shines on a gas burner — it's not suitable for induction cooktops.
  • Donabe recipes: Hotpots, rice and more to get you started.
