The Mikawa Portable is the round konro in our range: a Noto diatomite lining from Nanao, pressed inside a black steel case with a carry handle. Like the rectangular Mikawa it takes knocks better and costs less than the hand-cut Kinka Okunoto, with a little less heat than a solid block.
The Portable suits two to four people: the fire bowl is 14cm across and 17cm deep — narrow and deep, so a small charge of binchotan sits in a tall stack and burns for hours. At 3.9kg it is the lightest diatomite konro we sell. A session takes 300–400g of binchotan — 30–45 minutes to light, then three to four hours of steady heat; leftovers can be extinguished and reused.

What binchotan and tools does the Mikawa Portable need?
The Mikawa Portable takes 300–400g of binchotan a session — fill its fire bowl no more than two-thirds deep. A 2kg bag of Tosa binchotan is five or six sessions, and leftovers can be extinguished and lit again. See the full binchotan range by region and cut. The grill comes with a disposable mesh; a reusable round mesh (27.5cm) replaces it.
Then, in the order you will use them:
- Wooden base — sits under the grill to protect the table (included in the starter set); otherwise use another heat-proof surface.
- Natural firelighters — six to eight cubes at the bottom of the chimney.
- Charcoal chimney — light the binchotan in it, away from the grill; allow 30–45 minutes.
- Chimney mesh — keep a separate mesh just for the chimney: lay it over the top to stop popping charcoal and sparks flying out. A 27 x 21cm mesh fits.
- Long charcoal tongs — move the glowing charcoal into the grill at arm's length; the wooden handles stay cool in the hand.
- Extinguishing pot — puts the fire out and saves the leftover charcoal; the 2-in-1 chimney doubles as one.

How is the Mikawa Portable shipped?
- Packed for a brittle lining. The steel case takes knocks, but the diatomite inside does not flex, so the grill is double-boxed with thick padding. See how we pack your parcel.
- Insured in transit. If the box arrives damaged, photograph it before unpacking further and email us straight away — we replace it. Cosmetic marks in the clay are not transit damage; see Important Notes.

Important Notes
- Outdoor use only, in a well-ventilated space, on a wooden base or another heat-proof surface.
- Cosmetic marks in the clay are normal, even on a new grill — see the photo below. They do not affect performance; the steel case carries the structure.
- Never use water to put out charcoal. Let it burn out, or use an extinguishing pot.
- No change-of-mind returns. Diatomite grills are delicate, so please choose carefully.
About Mikawa
Mikawa konro are made by the Kamejima family in Hekinan, Aichi — the Mikawa-yaki pottery town where Japan's shichirin charcoal stoves have been made since the late Edo period.
