Mikawa Konro & Hibachi Grill Starter Set - 38cm - Red
The Mikawa is the moulded-diatomite konro in our range: the same Noto diatomite as the hand-cut Kinka Okunoto, pressed into a red steel case with reinforced corners. It takes knocks better and costs less, with a little less heat than a solid block.
The 38cm suits four to six people: a fixed divider splits the fire chamber into two 13 x 13cm halves, room for about nine skewers — light one half for a smaller group. A session takes about 800g of binchotan — the set's 2kg is about two and a half sessions — 30–45 minutes to light, then three to four hours of steady heat; leftovers can be extinguished and reused.

What else do I need to start grilling?
The set covers the grill, base, meshes, charcoal, skewers and tongs. You will still want:
- Charcoal chimney — the only safe way to light binchotan; this one doubles as an extinguisher.
- Natural firelighters — two or three cubes under the chimney.
- Extinguishing pot — puts the fire out and saves the leftover charcoal for next time.
Important Notes
For outdoor use only. Charcoal grills must be used in a well-ventilated outdoor space, on the included wooden base or another heat-proof surface.
Cosmetic marks in the clay are normal, including on a new grill — see the photo below. They do not affect performance; the steel case carries the structure.
Never use water to extinguish charcoal. Let it burn out, or transfer it to a dedicated charcoal extinguisher pot.
About Mikawa
Mikawa konro are made by the Kamejima family in Hekinan, Aichi — the Mikawa-yaki pottery town where Japan's shichirin charcoal stoves have been made since the late Edo period.
