Mikawa Konro Grill Starter Set - 38cm - Red

This starter set provides all the essentials for an authentic Japanese tabletop barbecue, sized for groups of 4–6 people, so you can start grilling straight out of the box.

The centrepiece is the rectangular Mikawa Konro — often known as a hibachi grill in Australia. Its red steel case with reinforced corners protects a thick moulded diatomite interior — the same insulating material as the premium cut-block Kinka Okunoto, housed in a tougher, more affordable form. The diatomite directs heat up to the cooking surface, so charcoal burns consistently and efficiently.

Important Notes

For outdoor use only. Charcoal grills must be used in a well-ventilated outdoor space, on the included wooden base or another heat-proof surface.

Cosmetic marks in the clay are normal, including on a new grill — see the photo below. They do not affect performance; the steel case carries the structure.

Never use water to extinguish charcoal. Let it burn out, or transfer it to a dedicated charcoal extinguisher pot.

Cosmetic imperfections in the diatomite interior of a new Mikawa konro grill are normal.

Use & Care
  • User guide: Setting up, using and caring for your konro grill.
  • Lighting binchotan: Dense white charcoal takes longer to light than regular charcoal — our guide shows the safe way.
  • Ventilation: Use your konro outdoors or in a well-ventilated space only — never in an enclosed room.
  • Water: Never pour water on a hot konro — sudden temperature change can crack the body. Let the coals burn down or remove them safely.
  • Reuse: Binchotan can be snuffed out in an airtight metal container and relit next time.
