Premium Tosa Binchotan Japanese White Charcoal - 12kg (Han-Maru Cut)

While Kishu is the birthplace of binchotan, Tosa (Kochi Prefecture) is its powerhouse. Made from the same dense Ubame Oak (Quercus phillyraeoides) as Kishu charcoal, Tosa Binchotan is famous for intense firepower and long burn duration — the same metallic ring when struck, the same glass-like density.

In Japan, Tosa Binchotan is the charcoal of choice for traditional unagi (eel) specialists, who rely on its powerful, stable infrared heat for the signature result: crisp on the outside, juicy within. This 12kg pack comes in the Han-Maru cut — whole natural rounds, the slowest-lighting but longest-burning form — professional-grade heat for extended sessions on the grill.

Key Features

  • The Powerhouse Region: Kochi's rugged forestry yields high-quality Ubame Oak, giving Tosa charcoal its intense, sustained firepower.
  • The Unagi Choice: Favoured by eel masters for high infrared output that seals in juices while crisping the surface.
  • Han-Maru Longevity: Whole natural rounds hold consistent high heat longer than any other cut — suited to extended grilling and the 54cm konro.
  • Clean Combustion: Minimal smoke and odour, leaving the food's flavour unaltered.
  • 12kg Pack: The 12kg bulk box keeps a consistent supply for high-frequency use.

About Tosa Binchotan

Produced in Kochi Prefecture, Tosa Binchotan benefits from the region's rugged forestry, which yields high-quality Ubame Oak. While Kishu established the method, Tosa artisans perfected production at scale without compromising quality. The charcoal is fired at temperatures exceeding 1000°C, leaving a carbon structure so dense it rings like metal when struck — the primary indicator of authentic, high-grade charcoal.

Use & Care
  • User guide: Setting up, using and caring for your konro grill.
  • Lighting binchotan: Dense white charcoal takes longer to light than regular charcoal — our guide shows the safe way.
  • Ventilation: Use your konro outdoors or in a well-ventilated space only — never in an enclosed room.
  • Water: Never pour water on a hot konro — sudden temperature change can crack the body. Let the coals burn down or remove them safely.
  • Reuse: Binchotan can be snuffed out in an airtight metal container and relit next time.
