Tosa Binchotan 4kg Pack

Premium Tosa Binchotan Japanese White Charcoal - 2kg (Han-Maru Cut)

Tosa Binchotan is ubame oak white charcoal from Kochi, made the same way as Kishu: carbonised above 1000°C and finished under ash. It burns as glowing embers rather than flame — a strong, steady infrared heat that sears without scorching — and a load lasts several hours. In Japan it is rated second only to Kishu, and is the everyday binchotan of yakitori and unagi restaurants.

This 2kg pack is the Han-Maru cut — whole natural rounds, the slowest to light but the longest-burning form — enough for about two sessions on a small konro.

Allow 30–45 minutes to light in a chimney with natural firelighters. Leftover pieces can be extinguished in a pot and lit again next time; store indoors in a sealed container.

What's Included

  • 1 x Premium Tosa Binchotan Japanese White Charcoal - 2kg (Han-Maru Cut)

Key Features

  • No Flame, No Flare-ups: Dripping fat does not catch on glowing embers, so food browns without scorching.
  • Dense Structure: Stable infrared heat with low convection, keeping food moist while it sears.
  • Han-Maru Cut: Whole rounds hold high heat longer than any other cut.
  • Same Oak as Kishu: Ubame oak, one of the densest species used for charcoal.
  • Reusable: Extinguished in a pot, unburnt pieces light again next session.

About Tosa Binchotan

Kishu established the method; Tosa artisans perfected production at scale, and Kochi is now the second of Japan's three binchotan regions — some batches are judged the equal of Kishu. Fired above 1000°C, the charcoal is so dense it rings like metal when struck, the primary indicator of authentic, high-grade binchotan.

Use & Care
  • User guide: Setting up, using and caring for your konro grill.
  • Lighting binchotan: Dense white charcoal takes longer to light than regular charcoal — our guide shows the safe way.
  • Ventilation: Use your konro outdoors or in a well-ventilated space only — never in an enclosed room.
  • Water: Never pour water on a hot konro — sudden temperature change can crack the body. Let the coals burn down or remove them safely.
  • Reuse: Binchotan can be snuffed out in an airtight metal container and relit next time.
